the big bad scary gym

So sometimes the gym can be intimidating…  I get it.  I felt the same way when I first walked through the doors as a young kid.  But young, old, or middle aged the truth of the matter is that the gym is what you make it, and a lot of insecurities we face are based on figments of our imagination; Insignificant lies we tell ourselves when we have the need to feel special.  Harsh right?  But maybe not…

The truth is, no one really cares about what you’re doing in the gym.  No one is paying too much attention to you and if they are then they’re likely not focusing on their own shit which means they’re probably just as nervous and scared themselves…

The truth is, as long as you follow the golden rule that your rights exist only until you infringe upon those around you, no one has a right to say or do anything to make you uncomfortable.  And if they do, it’s ultimately a reflection upon themselves, not you or anything you’re doing.

As scary as a self-induced nervousness of the gym can be…  Scarier still, is inaction.  Scarier still is the thought of doing nothing at all.  Fear is an illusion.  Regret lives forever.

It boils down to finding personal strength in adversity…  No one starts out in the shape of their life.  No one starts out strong and confident.  While a lot of the time we catch looks from other people if we really could enjoy an omniscient perspective we would realize that the majority of those looks are people scanning the room because they are just as equally scared or nervous.

I am going to slap you with some truth here…  And it’s something I came to realize over the course of many years in the gym and trying to sculpt my own reflection of a perfect body…

Bodybuilders and fitness athletes are some of the most insecure people you’ll meet.  I know.  I am one of them.  Constantly evaluating, constantly judging myself…  On the outside I put off a mean exterior.  I mean… I’m badass right?  Wrong…  I’m nervous.  I’m pushing my physical limits and I’m scared to death of my own shadow…  I stay in the zone of intensity not only to get a good workout, but also to avoid the distractions of all the people who I think might be watching and judging who really aren’t…  Because they’re doing the same damn thing…

I guess what I am saying is before embarking on your gym journey know this:  You are awesome.  You deserve every right to be comfortable in your own skin, and you reserve the right to be able to work on yourself without judgement or repercussions, you have just as much right to be there as anyone else.  Put on some good music, feel the energy and know the person you are becoming.  You deserve to be the best you mentally and physically.  You are an unshakable force.  You are worthy.

Much love and success in your fitness journey this year.  Believe, behave, become.  Antihero loves you.  You just gotta love yourself too.  Happy new year.
